Uncovering Cho Lon: A journey through time and cultures.

Cho Lon, once a thriving city, now stands as a time capsule, frozen in a moment of its past.

Currently regarded as the Chinatown of Saigon, Cho Lon boundlessly extends across District 5 and 6, reaching into the lesser-known District 11. It holds centuries-long history, engraved in hundred-year-old temples and buildings, with inherited businesses and cultures passing through generations. Such a testament stands against the force of time, for many unspoken reasons, the vibrant culture of Chinatown has been slowly fading away. In between the traditional past and the progressive current of life, there are groups and individuals of youthful and passionate Chinese Vietnamese people who are trying to revitalize the essence of their long-lasting traditions. They envision a future in which the customs and values are well preserved and connected inclusively to Saigon’s ways of life.

Meet Ha Ngan Duc, a lifelong practitioner of Fujian music, and the leader of Kien Hue – A group of proud and dedicated individuals for this centuries-old music. Born into a Fujian family in the late 80s, Duc spent his childhood immersed in the rich culture of the vibrant District 5. There, his curiosity met the beautiful ancient music art of Fujian that was brought into the country over 270 years ago. The novelty edge had kept the young soul learning most of the musical instruments and nurturing his interest for years to come. He started young with lessons of the flute and the erhu – a two-stringed bowed instrument, and gradually mastered a whole orchestra with the Tam three-stringed lute and the Chinese lute, Pipa. By the time he reached his teenage age, it was the youthful fire, fueling his passion to perform this intricate art and share its beauty with the world around him. For over 30 years, his pride and passion for Fujian music have inspired like-minded fellows to practice, forming the Kien Hue group.

Once a serenity reflecting through the music turns to fear of time corroding the lost art. From maintaining young people’s interest to competing with modern forms of entertainment, Fujian music in Cho Lon is running on limited resources and funding. Through challenges and trials, the Kien Hue group became a bridge between ancient art and the modern lifestyle, they innovated ways to reintroduce the traditions through media, made the art more accessible to the younger generations, and collaborated with different communities to promote and preserve this intangible cultural heritage.

Reflecting Cho Lon’s vibrant spirit, the Chinese Vietnamese community strives to revitalize their heritage, encompassing music, art, cuisine, and language. By fostering cultural exchange and actively engaging younger generations, they seek to not only preserve their traditions but also enrich Saigon’s cultural landscape. This effort aims to cultivate a city where all cultures are valued and celebrated, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse heritage that makes Saigon unique.
